Google gets a price or rating the page contradicts

The product’s structured data tells Google a price the store doesn’t charge, a currency the page isn’t shown in, or two different star ratings, so Google shows shoppers something the page won’t honour.

Checked on: product pages · Zolvio’s check: “Google gets a price, currency or rating this page contradicts”

Why it costs you sales

Google’s results, Shopping listings and Merchant Center read a product page’s structured data (its JSON-LD Product markup) for the price, currency and star rating they show. A shopper who clicks a lower price in Google and finds a higher one on the page leaves, or complains.

Merchant Center disapproves products whose markup price isn’t the page’s (“mismatched value”) and can suspend the account. The cause is usually one stale block in the theme, or an app’s hard-coded markup, next to Shopify’s own.

How Zolvio detects it

Zolvio reads every Product and ProductGroup entity in the page’s JSON-LD, nested ones included (a graph, a product group’s variants); lists of other products, such as recommendations, aren’t read. Pages marked noindex are skipped, since Google doesn’t use their markup.

Each markup price for one of this product’s own variants (matched by variant id, or by the offer’s address) is compared with the store’s own answer for the product (its /products/…/handle.js address), read in the audit’s browser so it’s in the currency the page was shown in. A price the store doesn’t charge for that variant counts, unless the product area shows it (an automatic discount shows both prices); differences under about 1% don’t count, and prices are never judged from the page’s text alone (bundle, add-on and instalment prices). A markup currency that isn’t the currency the store showed the page in counts.

Two ratings for the product count when their stars differ by 0.2 or more, or their review counts by a quarter or more of the larger, with at least 10 reviews on one side. Only numbers, currency codes and the markup’s own ratings are compared, so pages in any language are judged. The finding quotes the markup next to what contradicts it. A price or currency contradiction is high, two ratings that disagree medium.

Members-only pages aren’t judged: a page without an add-to-cart form that shows a password or verification form in its content, such as a lock app’s (Easy Lockdown, Locksmith) or a VIP sign-in in the theme. A sign-in box in the header, the footer, a pop-up or a drawer doesn’t count, since it’s on every page. Neither is a product page used for a consultation or a quote: one without an add-to-cart form whose main content asks the shopper to request a quote, talk to a specialist or book a consultation. An ask your buyable product pages show too, such as a banner on every page, doesn’t count.

This is a direct measurement, so it’s reported on every plan, including Free and audits with AI turned off. With AI review on, the AI agent also checks it against the audit’s evidence before it reaches your issue list.

How to fix it

  1. Open the page in Google’s Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) and look at each Product item: its price, currency and rating.
  2. Find where the extra or stale markup comes from: Online Store → Themes → Edit code, search the product template and snippets for “application/ld+json”, and check your review and SEO apps’ settings.
  3. Remove the extra block, or make it read the product’s live price and the currency the page is shown in (Liquid’s product and cart objects, not a typed-in number); keep one review app’s rating in the markup.
  4. Re-run the Rich Results Test: one Product, the price the page shows, one rating.

In Zolvio: on paid plans with AI turned on, the guided fix writes these steps for your own store and theme: where to click in Shopify admin or the theme editor, or which file to open, the line to find and the code to add. Each file opens in Shopify’s code editor. Zolvio never edits your theme: you make the change, then Verify fix checks your published theme for code changes (or you mark it fixed), and later audits confirm the problem is gone.
