Product structured data missing or unreadable

The page has no Product structured data search engines can read: the hidden markup that tells them the product’s price, availability and rating.

Checked on: product pages · Zolvio’s check: “Product structured data missing or unreadable”

Why it costs you sales

Structured data is a description of the product written for search engines and hidden from shoppers, usually in a format called JSON-LD: its name, price, availability and, if it has reviews, its rating. Google uses it for product rich results, the price, stock and star rating that can appear with a product in search results.

A block that’s there but broken, for example with a line break inside the description, is skipped by search engines just as if it were missing.

How Zolvio detects it

Zolvio reads the structured data (JSON-LD) blocks in each product page’s code, as the page stands once it has loaded in a real browser, and looks for one that describes a Product, or a ProductGroup, Shopify’s form for a product with variants. It also accepts Product markup written as microdata (itemtype="https://schema.org/Product") or RDFa (typeof="Product"), which some themes use instead and search engines read too. The page is flagged when neither is there: no JSON-LD block it can read describes a product (there’s none, or the one there isn’t valid JSON), and there’s no such markup.

The finding lists the kinds of structured data the page does have and, for a block that can’t be read (up to three), the error and the text around it.

Members-only pages aren’t judged: a page without an add-to-cart form that shows a password or verification form in its content, such as a lock app’s (Easy Lockdown, Locksmith) or a VIP sign-in in the theme. A sign-in box in the header, the footer, a pop-up or a drawer doesn’t count, since it’s on every page. Neither is a product page used for a consultation or a quote: one without an add-to-cart form whose main content asks the shopper to request a quote, talk to a specialist or book a consultation. An ask your buyable product pages show too, such as a banner on every page, doesn’t count.

How to fix it

  1. Check the page in Google’s Rich Results Test: it should find a Product item.
  2. If it doesn’t, open the product section or template the page uses (Online Store → Themes → Edit code) and add Shopify’s output, {{ product | structured_data }}, inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag.
  3. If a block is there but broken, fix it in the same file: print each value through Liquid’s json filter, so line breaks and quotes are escaped.
  4. If the page is built with a page builder app, turn on its product structured data (SEO) setting, or ask its support.

In Zolvio: on paid plans with AI turned on, the guided fix writes these steps for your own store and theme: where to click in Shopify admin or the theme editor, or which file to open, the line to find and the code to add. Each file opens in Shopify’s code editor. Zolvio never edits your theme: you make the change, then Verify fix checks your published theme for code changes (or you mark it fixed), and later audits confirm the problem is gone.
