No way to choose a size or color

The product comes in several variants, but shoppers can’t pick one, so they can only buy the default.

Checked on: product pages · Zolvio’s check: “Variant selector not visible”

Why it costs you sales

For products that come in sizes or colors, choosing one is part of buying. If the page offers no way to choose, shoppers either leave or add the default without realizing, which leads to wrong orders and returns.

How Zolvio detects it

Zolvio reads the product’s variants from the product data Shopify puts on every product page. If there are two or more, it looks at the page’s elements for a way to choose between them: a variant picker, swatches, Shopify’s option dropdowns or option buttons, or any element whose class names an option. A closed dropdown still counts. Custom pickers count too: buttons, swatches, cards or options that carry a variant’s id or are named after one of its option values (“Black”, “Large”), when the page offers at least two of them. Shopify’s hidden master list of variants doesn’t count. If there’s none, the page is flagged. Products with a single variant aren’t judged.

A gift card sold through a gift-card app isn’t judged: the product is a gift card (in your store’s product list, or by its type in Shopify’s product data) and the page has no add-to-cart form, since such apps draw the amounts, the price and the buy button in the shopper’s browser from their own servers, which the audit’s browser doesn’t load.

Members-only pages aren’t judged: a page without an add-to-cart form that shows a password or verification form in its content, such as a lock app’s (Easy Lockdown, Locksmith) or a VIP sign-in in the theme. A sign-in box in the header, the footer, a pop-up or a drawer doesn’t count, since it’s on every page. Neither is a product page used for a consultation or a quote: one without an add-to-cart form whose main content asks the shopper to request a quote, talk to a specialist or book a consultation. An ask your buyable product pages show too, such as a banner on every page, doesn’t count.

How to fix it

  1. In the theme editor, open the product template and add the variant picker block to the product information section.
  2. Choose buttons or a dropdown in that block’s settings, whichever suits your options, and use swatches for colors if your theme supports them.
  3. In the product admin, check the product’s options (size, color) are set up as variants.
  4. Add a size guide link next to the size option if fit matters for the product.

In Zolvio: on paid plans with AI turned on, the guided fix writes these steps for your own store and theme: where to click in Shopify admin or the theme editor, or which file to open, the line to find and the code to add. Each file opens in Shopify’s code editor. Zolvio never edits your theme: you make the change, then Verify fix checks your published theme for code changes (or you mark it fixed), and later audits confirm the problem is gone.
