Cart doesn’t mention shipping

The cart says nothing about shipping or delivery, so shoppers only find out what delivery costs at checkout, when a surprise is most likely to end the order.

Checked on: the cart (with an item in it) · Zolvio’s check: “Missing shipping estimate”

Why it costs you sales

Shipping is part of the price. When the cart says nothing about it, shoppers first see the cost at checkout, after they’ve committed, and an unexpected charge at that point is a common reason to abandon an order.

A line under the subtotal, whether a flat rate, a free-shipping threshold or “Shipping calculated at checkout”, sets expectations before checkout.

How Zolvio detects it

With its own item in the cart, Zolvio reads the text a shopper can see on your cart page, measured in a real browser (hidden text, text only screen readers get, and scripts don’t count; image and icon labels do), and looks for shipping, delivery or ships to. If none of them are there, the page is flagged.

The item goes in through Shopify’s cart API in a private browser session that’s thrown away afterwards; checkout is never opened and nothing is bought. Product pages that say nothing about delivery or returns are a check of their own.

Only English pages are judged (the page’s language tag, or Shopify’s language for the store when the theme sets none), since some of the words it looks for are English.

A store that sells by quote isn’t judged on this: one whose product pages show “Add to quote”, “Request a quote” or “Get a quote”, and none shows “Add to cart”, “Add to bag”, “Add to basket” or “Buy now”.

What it looks for in the text shoppers see

  • shipping
  • delivery
  • ships to

This finding is reported after AI review: on paid plans with AI turned on, the AI agent checks it against the audit’s evidence before it reaches your issue list. Audits without AI report only the 22 measured checks.

AI screenshot review also looks for this problem (“No shipping information before checkout”) in desktop and mobile screenshots. When both find it, you get one issue.

How to fix it

  1. Review your rates in Settings → Shipping and delivery, so the message you show is accurate.
  2. In the theme editor, open the cart template and add a text block under the subtotal with your shipping cost, free-shipping threshold or delivery time.
  3. Keep it accurate: if rates vary by location, say so instead of quoting one number.
  4. Add a product to your cart, open the cart page and check the line shows.

Shopify calculates the exact rate at checkout. Your theme can show your rules and thresholds; a shipping app can show live estimates.

In Zolvio: on paid plans with AI turned on, the guided fix writes these steps for your own store and theme: where to click in Shopify admin or the theme editor, or which file to open, the line to find and the code to add. Each file opens in Shopify’s code editor. Zolvio never edits your theme: you make the change, then Verify fix checks your published theme for code changes (or you mark it fixed), and later audits confirm the problem is gone.
