Missing or thin product description
A description of a line or two leaves shoppers without the details they need to buy.
Checked on: product pages · Zolvio’s check: “Missing product description”
Why it costs you sales
The description is where shoppers check materials, sizing, what’s included and whether the product suits them. No description, or a line or two, leaves those questions unanswered, and unanswered questions end in a closed tab or a return.
The description is also the main text search engines read on a product page.
How Zolvio detects it
Zolvio reads each product’s own description, the one you write in Shopify admin, from your store’s public product list (/products.json, up to 250 products), and counts its words with the formatting removed. A product page is flagged when the description has fewer than 20 words, the product area of the page (the section around the product’s own add-to-cart form) shows fewer than 300 words in all, and the page doesn’t show a description of its own there either. The finding quotes the start of the description.
That description can come from somewhere other than the catalog: Zolvio reads the product area’s description blocks, rich text (from metafields too), tabs and accordions, closed ones included, and counts their words. Text in them that’s a price, delivery, returns or payment terms, a rating, the product’s title or a control doesn’t count, and neither does text that more than half of the audit’s product pages show (and more than three of them): that’s your store’s template text, repeated on every product, not this product’s description. 20 words or more of its own and the page isn’t flagged.
A page with more to read in its product area, such as specifications, tabs or landing-page sections, isn’t flagged whatever the description says. Gift cards, products the audit couldn’t find in the list, and pages without an add-to-cart form aren’t judged.
Members-only pages aren’t judged: a page without an add-to-cart form that shows a password or verification form in its content, such as a lock app’s (Easy Lockdown, Locksmith) or a VIP sign-in in the theme. A sign-in box in the header, the footer, a pop-up or a drawer doesn’t count, since it’s on every page. Neither is a product page used for a consultation or a quote: one without an add-to-cart form whose main content asks the shopper to request a quote, talk to a specialist or book a consultation. An ask your buyable product pages show too, such as a banner on every page, doesn’t count.
This finding is reported after AI review: on paid plans with AI turned on, the AI agent checks it against the audit’s evidence before it reaches your issue list. Audits without AI report only the 22 measured checks.
AI screenshot review also looks for this problem (“Missing product description”) in desktop and mobile screenshots. When both find it, you get one issue.
How to fix it
- Open the product in Shopify admin (Products → the product) and write the description there; it’s product data, not theme code.
- Lead with what the product does for the buyer, then cover materials, dimensions or sizing, what’s in the box and care instructions.
- Use short paragraphs and a bulleted list so it’s easy to scan on a phone.
- Write something specific to each product rather than reusing one description across many.
On paid plans with AI turned on, the issue page in Zolvio has a description writer: it drafts a description for each flagged product, you review and apply it, and the original is kept so you can restore it.
In Zolvio: on paid plans with AI turned on, the guided fix writes these steps for your own store and theme: where to click in Shopify admin or the theme editor, or which file to open, the line to find and the code to add. Each file opens in Shopify’s code editor. Zolvio never edits your theme: you make the change, then Verify fix checks your published theme for code changes (or you mark it fixed), and later audits confirm the problem is gone.
